Quite a subject. There are a lot of meanings to whistles even within American English, like the wolf whistle in construction zones, the whee---ew! whistle as in "Whew, it just missed me". How about the hailing a taxi whistle? Or how about the Woodstock whistle that goes like this: !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!! !!!! That little bird who whistles to Snoopy like this, and he understands it all.
